c 1485 Madonna and Child with Cherubim
Colourized 2024 by Mark Edward Westerfield.
with frame.
I minimally computer colourized the all white main sculptural area that had been left white some 539 years ago.
So I added the golden halos, the blonde hair (common in the period), the flesh colour, and the unhidden part of Mary's blue robe.
I purposely chose pale tint colours.
I purposely left the cherubim wings, the central portion of Mary's garment, and baby Jesus' baby towel as they were, to keep the look simpler.
I did straighten the image and I did add eye highlights.
The eye pupils and brows were there already.
The 'Robbia Blue' and gold were original with the pottery.
It was a great blessing to have a very high resolution image to work with.
And it was miraculous that this some 539 year old terra cotta pottery survived undamaged.
The combination is such a blessing to do anything like this.
And it is just gorgeous.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs.
it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!
