Amish One Room School Room Postcard

Few if any one-room school houses remain in use today in the United States. But for almost 200 years almost every child received their education in a one-room schoolhouse room. On the corner of our farm a one-room schoolhouse has been converted into a home. My grandmother attended school in that one-room schoolhouse. When the Northwest Territories were mapped the land was predominantly flat and was easily divided into square miles. This is easily observed as one flies across the midsection of the country. Every couple of miles one acre was reserved on which was to be built a one-room school. And despite what your grandfather has probably told you about walking long distances uphill both ways to go to a one-room school, this grid placed no student any further than 1 mile from the nearest one-room schoolhouse. Today many one-room school houses are still being used in the Amish areas. Children from five years old to 14 years old are all taught in the same room. Classes vary in size from a dozen to three dozen. Amish children and one teacher. When children reach their 14th birthday they no longer attend the one-room school. It is time for them to begin learning skills from their parents on the farm.the education one receives from a one-room school and its teacher can be as good as or even better than that obtained from modern school buildings. The class and teacher are kind of like a family. The older students frequently will assist the younger. The younger become exposed to ideas and problems that they will be receiving several years in advance. There is no cafeteria nor school buses or football teams or marching bands at one-room schools. The time is devoted to reading, writing and arithmetic. Everyone packs their lunch and weather permitting it will be an outside during the noon break. Many teachers prefer a one-room school because of its togetherness and the ability to give each child special attention. Almost everyone finds the site of a one-room school house quaint. It brings back memories for some and wonderment and questions from others. Since it has touched the lives of so many people it is no wonder that one-room school house rooms have become a cherished part of Americana.
