Akmad's New Baby Son at Camp Leakey Announcement Postcard

Look at this beautiful baby boy born near Camp Leakey to famous orangutan mother Akmad! What a great hairdo and tender family moment captured by Biruté Mary Galdikas, the remarkable woman who built Camp Leakey as her research site in the 1970's. Akmad is now in her 40's and is the orphan who appeared on the cover of National Geographic Magazine in October 1975. (She's the one holding the hand and walking in front of Dr. Galdikas, who had completed her PhD. at UCLA and been chosen as one of three women by Dr. Louis Leakey to study the great apes.) Orangutans are an endangered species, and sales of this wildlife postcard help OFI to continue the decades-long work of saving the gentle red apes.
