The Akita family crest is said to have originated when Ando Sadatosi was summoned to Kyoto during the Kenkyu era (1190-1199) and received a beautiful Japanese cypress fan from Emperor Gotoba. At that time, a large eagle was presented from Goryeo (Korea), and the emperor gave two of its feathers to Sadatosi, placing them on the fan, saying 'For a warrior, what greater honor could there be?' This is recorded in 'Hankanfu' (a collection of feudal lord family histories compiled by Arai Hakuseki in the early Edo period). This is said to be the origin of the Akita family crest 'Japanese cypress fan with eagle feathers' (from 'The Family Crests of Daimyo Families' by Kenichi Takahashi). In 'A Study of Definitive Crests' by Manjiro Fukui, this is referred to as 'Akita family Japanese cypress fan with eagle feathers'.
