Encounter on the 2nd November 1944 Greeting Card Major William S. Crombie's P51D Mustang. This painting is based on a combat encounter report of an action that took place on 2nd November 1944. Major Crombie, then a Captain, from the 385th Fighter Squadron based at Honington, Suffolk in the UK was climbing to intercept four ME109.s spotted above his group, Northwest of Leipzig. Coming within 800 yards of the leader he opened fire, and then closing to 400 yards another burst from his Mustang hit the 109's supercharger. The doomed Messerschmitt reared up and began to spin out of control. The kill was witnessed and confirmed by a colleague flying on William's wing.
