Adoration of the Holy Trinity Poster

The painting forms the central panel of a triptych commissioned by Duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga for the Jesuit Church of the Holy Trinity in Mantua. The side panels depicted The Baptism of Christ and The Transfiguration by Rubens. It portrays the Gonzaga family kneeling in prayer before the Holy Trinity, which is represented indirectly on a rich golden tapestry held by angels above them, following Counter-Reformation guidelines that discouraged direct depictions of the divine alongside mortals. Duke Vincenzo I and his wife Eleonora de’ Medici are near the images of Vincenzo’s parents, Guglielmo Gonzaga and Eleonore of Austria. Several of their children are also included, divided by gender on either side, accompanied by Swiss halberdiers, one of whom is a self-portrait of Rubens.
