Abu Simbel Temples Egypt Magnet

The massive rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel were created during the 13th century BC by the pharaoh Ramesses II as a lasting monument to himself and his queen Nefertari. Carved into a mountainside, the complex features colossal statues of Ramesses II guarding the entrance, which are remarkably well-preserved. In a spectacular engineering feat in the 1960s, the entire complex was relocated to higher ground to save it from submersion by the rising waters of Lake Nasser after the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The temples are a testament to ancient Egyptian architectural mastery and artistic detail. Inside, the Great Temple's main sanctuary is aligned so that twice a year, on October 22nd and February 22nd (said to be the pharaoh's birthday and coronation), the rising sun shines directly through the length of the entrance to illuminate the statues on the far back wall. Abu Simbel remains one of Egypt's most awe-inspiring sights and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
