Abisko National Park, located about 250 km north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland, is one of Sweden’s most famous natural destinations and a top spot for Northern Lights viewing. Established in 1909, the park spans over 77 km² of pristine wilderness, encompassing the Abiskodalen Valley, the crystal-clear Lake Torneträsk, and surrounding mountain ranges. Its most iconic landmark is Lapporten (“The Lapponian Gate”), a U-shaped valley visible from the park and often photographed as a symbol of the region. The park is a starting point for the Kungsleden (“King’s Trail”), one of Sweden’s most celebrated long-distance hiking routes. In summer, it offers wildflower-filled meadows, midnight sun views, and opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife spotting, with species such as moose, reindeer, and arctic foxes. In winter, Abisko is world-renowned for aurora viewing thanks to its dry microclimate and frequent clear skies. The Aurora Sky Station, perched high above the valley, is a dedicated observation point where visitors can watch the Northern Lights in a landscape of snow-covered peaks and frozen lakes.
