Abbott Handerson Thayer was an American naturalist and artist who frequently depicted beautiful young women as angels and embodied virtues. A Virgin is one of his most popular paintings and is an allusion to the Greek sculpture Winged Victory of Samothrace. The work features a young girl with auburn hair marching through a field holding the hands of a little boy and little girl. The boy wears a red shawl and carries a stick, while the girl wears a green shawl and carries a flower. The Virgin herself is wrapped in a flowing yellow dress with wrap and her hair is tied back blowing in the wind. A beautiful gift for fans of Thayer, allegorical art, and romantic American painting.
