Abbaye de Sénanque France Magnet

Abbaye de Sénanque is a Cistercian monastery located in the narrow valley of the Sénancole river, just a few kilometres north of the hilltop village of Gordes in the Vaucluse département of Provence, France. Founded in 1148, the abbey is famous for its beautiful Romanesque architecture, which has remained largely intact. It is one of the three Cistercian abbeys in Provence known as the 'Three Sisters of Provence.' The abbey is set within a secluded and peaceful valley, surrounded by wooded hills and a small stream. The most striking feature of Abbaye de Sénanque is the vibrant fields of lavender that bloom directly in front of the abbey's facade during June and July. This dramatic contrast between the weathered stone of the mediaeval monastery and the intense purple hues of the lavender fields makes it one of the most iconic and photographed spots in Provence. The abbey is still a working monastery, and the monks cultivate lavender, olives, and bees, creating a tranquil and contemplative atmosphere. Visitors can explore the well-preserved church, cloister, dormitory, and chapter house, but must respect the silence and prayer of the resident monks.
