A Wish Left Waiting: Plate RH-WC-B2-005 Poster
Exhibition Description
A Wish Left Waiting captures a farewell whose importance would not be understood until many years later.
On a rain-darkened railway platform, a young traveller prepares to leave Roadstand Hollow carrying a modest suitcase and the silver pocket watch that will someday appear among the mysterious objects of the Wishing Shelf. A woman remains behind beneath the quiet glow of a blue lantern. Between them lies only a short stretch of wet platform, yet the distance that follows will eventually become measured in years.
The young man does not leave intending to disappear. He has every intention of returning after one more obligation. Miriam remembers that he was well loved in the Hollow—a helpful young man who repaired fences, carried groceries, and enthusiastically played the piano rather badly at the Harvest Social. Somewhere during his stay, he and a young woman came to care deeply for one another.
Years later, objects connected to that unfinished promise begin appearing. The Hollow remembers what ordinary memory gradually loses: not necessarily names or dates, but longing, regret, love, and the sincere promise of someone who meant to come home.
Rendered in rain-washed watercolor, A Wish Left Waiting freezes the final ordinary moment before waiting begins. Neither figure knows that this goodbye will become permanent. Neither understands that an old watch, a train ticket, and the emotional weight of a promise will eventually outlive the details of the people who made it.
Within The Watercolors of Roadstand Hollow, the plate transforms the mystery of the Wishing Shelf into a human story. The object has an origin. The waiting had a beginning. And once, before becoming a mystery, the wish belonged to two people who simply expected there would be another tomorrow.

Symbolism
The railroad tracks represent a road leading away with no guarantee of return.
The pocket watch represents time continuing after the promise is made.
The suitcase represents an intended temporary departure that becomes something far greater.
The blue lantern represents the person and place that continue waiting.
The empty platform between the figures represents the first small distance that will eventually become decades.
Collection Significance
Plate 005 gives a human origin to the mystery established in Plates 003 and 004.
We have seen emotion awaken.
We have encountered the nameless pocket watch.
Now we glimpse the people and the departure that may have placed so much longing inside it.
It also expands Book 2 visually beyond The Wishkeeper's Corner for the first time, giving the collection a broad, atmospheric outdoor scene and preventing the opening sequence from becoming too interior-heavy.

Role in Collection
A Wish Left Waiting is the origin-story plate for one of Book 2's central emotional mysteries. It visually connects the silver pocket watch, the blue lantern, the railway imagery, and the theme of waiting—elements that will continue echoing throughout the book.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs.
it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
