When I first saw this painting several years ago at the Art Institute of Chicago, it took my breath away. A lover of colour, I was amazed at the possibilities presented by this technique. Standing close to the painting, one sees abstract dots of pigment which create an optical harmony. Only when standing back from the canvas do the individual shapes, theme and story of the painting present itself in its entirety.
