A Baghdadi Hanukkah Lamp Foil Card

This card shows a brass Hanukkah lamp with glass cups, similar to ones used by Jewish families in Baghdad, Iraq, during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Lamps like this one featured hand-shaped hamsas, popular Middle Eastern symbols for good luck. Roosters and other motifs also adorned them. On Hanukkah, family members took turns lighting the lamp. Then they sat down to eat a festive meal in honour of the holiday, as the flames flickered in the lamp on the wall behind them.
