About This Design

#60YearsYonge Typography and Color Poster

#60YearsYonge Typography and Color Poster

On 30 March 1954, Canada's first Subway opened with great fanfare and civic pride. Toronto's Yonge Street Subway was an example of postwar modernist architecture and design, with a bespoke typeface colloquially called "Toronto Subway" set on wayfinding and transit branding. This poster reflects on the look and feel of each of the 12 subway stations on platform level when they opened in 1954. Each station is typeset and using a color scheme based on historical research and information. Eglinton Station, the northern terminus of the Yonge Line at the time of opening, still retains the original trim and typography, while the rest of the stations were renovated losing their original character.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs. it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
