Pompey originally recruited the 3rd Legion out of Roman citizens in Transalpine Gaul in 65 BC. In 49, Julius Caesar discharged them after their 16-year service. Caesar raised a new 3rd Legion later in 49. When Pompey received the 1st and 15th Legions from Caesar before the Civil Wars, Pompey renamed the 15th Legion to the 3rd, knowing that Caesar had formed his own 3rd Gallica Legion.
