1935 American Rocket Mail Tie
A 1935 stamp commemorating the ' First American Mailrocket Flight ' of September 22, 1935 at Greenwood Lake, New York. The date is a bit off as the actual launch of the rocket didn't take place until 1936. The target of the rocketed mail was the New Jersey town of Hewitt. The results were less than spectacular with the first rocket travelling 20 feet, a second travelled a bit further but ended up crashing onto the frozen lake. But the rocketed mail did make it to Hewitt as the town's postmaster dragged the two bags of mail from the ice to the post office. Other attempts were made but the nationwide implementation of mail delivered by rocket never got off the ground.
