1914 Map, SF to Petaluma Poster

This is an enlarged print of a map from an early auto guide book published in 1914. The “Hamilton’s Illustrated Auto Roadmap” book had 200 strip maps of California and included small photos of landmarks along the way. This map is of the old road from Golden Gate to Petaluma (now highway 101). It includes Saulsalito, Mill Valley, San Rafael, Gnacio, and Novata. The map has some fun thumbnail photos with notes that include "Turn at house", "Turn at Store", "Gate at turn" and "House at turn" (what house!). There is also a photo of Hotel San Rafael. Note that you needed to take the ferry from SF; cars were 75 cents and people 10 cents. (Keep that in mind next time you pay the toll at the Golden Gate!).
