13th Century Saint George Plaque

Though often portrayed as a mediaeval knight, Saint George was a late 3rd-early 4th century military tribune (martyred circa 303). According to legend, George heroically killed a dragon that had been terrorising the countryside around Silena in Libya. This particular portrayal of the warrior-saint by Richard H. Fay depicts him armed as a mediaeval knight of the 13th century.
