【いとわにつた】蔦は江戸時代には、上は将軍から下は花柳界の女性にいたるまで大いに愛好された。八代将軍吉宗は将軍家としての自分の血筋が絶えるのを心配して一橋・田安・清水の御三卿を立て、徳川家の本紋の葵の替え紋として蔦紋を用いた。これなど蔦の生命力の強さにあやかり、子孫の繁栄を願ったものに違いない（丹羽基二著「家紋知れば知るほど」）／芸奴・娼婦が好んでこれを用いたのは、その形状が優雅であったばかりでなく、その植物が他の物にまつわり絡まって繁茂したということが、なじみの客に執着し、離れないことを祝福する意義にも通じたことによるといわれている（「日本紋章学」）
