The architects of this massive structure were Iktinos and Kallikrates. The Parthenon is a temple of the Doric order. It has eight columns at the façade, flanked by seventeen columns on the sides, establishing a ratio of 9:4. The temple was to be the main focal point of the Acropolis. Its main function was to house the monumental statue of Athena that was created by Pheidias out of gold and ivory. Today, the Parthenon is a symbol for all of Greece and for Athens.
