This is a true hand tool, or I should say foot tool. You see at the base there is a foot pedal, connected to that a strap, and that's connected to a flexible branch, which in turn is connected to a leather strap. This leather strap is then connected to the piece your turning. The lathe just goes back and forth for a rather rough cut. But it still works after all these years.
