Breakdown is the story of a couple’s doomed road trip to Bagoda Bay. Driven by his girlfriend’s fascination with The Grey Rainbow, an underground movie filmed in the seaside city, Tom fixes up his beat-up car as a surprise and they soon find themselves on a journey beyond the boundaries of the rational.
When his girlfriend disappears from a nearby gas station, Tom is sent on a voyage into the heart of the twisted world of Bagoda Bay--a world populated with wild animals, shady mechanics, inept policemen, and corpses that refuse to admit they’re dead. When his beloved car breaks down, Tom finds himself doubly stranded--unable to escape and unwilling to give up the search for his girlfriend.
Complications arise when Tom discovers that anybody who views The Grey Rainbow is driven by an unknown compulsion to visit Bagoda Bay and meet an uncertain fate. With his girlfriend missing and his best friend on the way, Tom feels trapped in a fate he does not understand and begins to question whether his mind is any more reliable than the car that brought him to the strange city by the sea.
